Therapeutic Modalities in sport

Therapeutic modalities are methods used to stabilize an injury through creating an optimum environment for healing, reducing pain and discomfort. Modalities varies depending on the type and level of an injury. They are applied during different phases of rehabilitation so as to attain the desired result .

Selection of specific modalities depends on :

  • Injury site
  • Type and severity
  • Indications and contra- indications
  • Physician prescription
  • Athlete’s willingness to accept treatment

More is not better

Misuse or overuse of a modality can aggravate the condition and delay the athlete’s return to play.

We have four main types of modalities to be addressed in this lesson namely :

  • Cryotheraphy
  • Thermotherapy
  • Contrast
  • Manual therapy/massage
