ANKLE SPRAIN
Symptoms
- Sharp pain in the ankle region, usually on the outside of the
ankle. - Usually occurs from turning or twisting the ankle on an uneven
surface or by stepping on an Individual’s foot. - Swelling and discoloration to the ankle region is common.
IMMIDIATE ADDRESS DURING ACUTE PHASE
- Ice should be applied to ankle region and secured with an elastic
wrap. - Ice should remain on for 15-20 minutes while ankle is elevated.
- Icing should be done 3-5 times per day until inflammation and
pain subside.
PRE-PARTICIPATION PRECAUTIONS
- Ankle braces such as canvas lace-up braces, air casts, or gel
casts are beneficial in prevention of further injury. - Proper warm up including ankle rotation and calf stretching is
helpful and may prevent further injury.
